The film itself was based on an original Anita Loos novel from the 1920s which had gone through two previous plays, a musical and an earlier film as well. Monroe and Russell play nightclub entertainers headed to Europe, lustily pursued by diamond tycoon, Charles Coburn.as a classic dirty-old-man. Others in the cast include Elliott Reid and Tommy Noonan. The beautiful Technicolor process served Monroe very well and even her singing was not that bad. The film’s highlight song is “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend. The songs were by Jule Styne and Leo Robin, Hoagy Carmichael, and Lionel Newman. In 1955, Jane Russell sought to follow up on this film’s success by appearing in “Gentlemen Marry Brunettes” and, of course, Monroe had become a superstar, with no small help from this film.
