Delays plague improvements at radio station By DAVID LEE REGISTER CORRESPONDENT Iowa City, la. The University of Iowa's student run music station, says it's going to be the first fully digital college station in the country. That's as soon as the station can move out of its temporary home, an old barber shop inside the student union. "There are hair dryers and everything here," KRUI general manager John Barker said. "I figure we can make money cutting hair, The original plan was for the station, which shared a building with the university Reserve Officers Training Corps and the Public Policy Center, to move into an unused house near its FM antenna by the beginning of the spring semester so the policy center could expand.

However, problems in preparing the almost 70-year-old house have forced disc jockeys into the barber shop. The main problem with the house is that its three studios need to be soundproofed from each other, as well as from outside noises. KRUI will pay about and $2,200 to soundproof the house $1,000 move its equipment. The of I is paying about $90,000 to renovate the house. The station, which normally begins broadcasting on the first day of classes, had to wait an extra week it went on Sunday evening and find a place to do its remote broadcast.

Right now, the normally 24-hour station is on from 7 a.m. to midnight, disc jockeys have 200 albums to choose from instead of the usual 1,200, and the sound is mono. "It's running through some of the finest digital components in the world," Barker said, "and it's, well, AM." To make the situation bearable, the station calls itself Rebel Radio and is having a contest for listeners to try to locate it. However, Barker said broadcasting is to start from the house this weekend.
